mods, I have a suggestion: almost everybody here came from twitter, yet there's no simple way to verify that a handle on bh.org actually belongs to the same twitter account. easy enough to prove said ownership by tweeting about it, but cumbersome to verify again and again and to chase away impersonators. can mods add an "orange checkmark" for bh accounts that have verified their twitter handle?

@pox @stephanlivera @lukedashjr @Mandrik @verretor @TallTim @zlok @nvk Now could they verify that easily? I think it's simpler to solve it this way: verify both your Twitter and Mastodon with Keybase and let Keybase take care of this.

That's a good suggestion. But there's even a simpler one: include a link in your BH profile to a proof-tweet (saying "I'm @thisguy on BH") and then mods can verify by simply following one link and comparing the aliases.

@pox @ibz @lukedashjr @Mandrik @verretor @TallTim @zlok @nvk ok but as far as I'm aware there is no orange check mark, its gonna have to be a bit more decentralised than that. Basically let each person scrutinise accounts rather than pushing off the trust onto us mods

it's not much trust. the thing could be solved automatically by a chrome extension if we agreed on the proof format. point is right now it's n^2 verifications required, and I think some of you who have a big audience might feel differently when spam accounts inevitably show up here...
just saying..
at the very minimum encourage users to add a consistent twitter proof link to their bh profile

@pox @stephanlivera @lukedashjr @Mandrik @verretor @TallTim @zlok @nvk One can also simply add a link to Twitter in their Mastodon profile and vice versa. If they want to and care. The only drawback is that they lose some characters in the Twitter profile.

That's not the only drawback. The main drawback is that every user has to follow that link to verify every time (because there isn't even a way to annotate to yourself "yes, I've verified this person already").

But this rel=me direction looks promising: zylstra.org/blog/2018/10/masto

@pox it doesn't solve the issue of individually checking each profile and not having a reference for who is legit that you have already verified like a badge would.

@vanzyl yea, sadly the keybase feature doesn't accomplish this as well. users still need to follow the keybase link and look for the twitter handle and compare, and scammers would just tweak the alias slightly and work around that. this sounds like a feature request for mastodon...

@stephanlivera @pox @ibz @lukedashjr @Mandrik @verretor @TallTim @zlok @nvk FYI, if you have a personal website that people might know (e.g. like Stephan), you can put a rel="me" link on it that points to your Mastodon profile, which the default Mastodon software will verify for people viewing your profile. E.g., here's mine.

@harding @stephanlivera @ibz @lukedashjr @Mandrik @verretor @TallTim @zlok @nvk

very cool!
I wonder if there's a way to do the same with the Website field of your Twitter profile...
