Studying bitcoin, and bitcoiners, pushed me to reassess my positions on a wide variety of topics. I poked holes in fragile arguments, tore them down, and built them back up again with a strong foundation.
I am a much more confident, assured human being because of it.
When I go to a restaurant, I always offer the waiter a choice.
Tip in $ cash or bitcoin
I offer double if they choose bitcoin
Have onboarded dozens of people this way, leaving them some extra resources.
*In reality, I still give the same amount in cash. I'm not a monster.
I highly recommend trying this. You would be surprised by how many positive responses you receive. Lots of people who were on the edge (i.e "I've heard about it/always wanted to learn more") and this is the push they need.
After reflecting at 80C; my near future plan is to keep running this indeterminately
Socialmedia is at dire times, I don't want to dump this cosy spot until we've better solutions
I strongly encourage ppl who can, run their own instances & just connect to us
NOT YOUR INSTANCE

I will keep signups closed, maybe invite only later
Moderation rules will remain the same w/ the exception of being less understanding w/ ppl being dicks, that includes bitching about BH on Twitter
@nvk @alanturing @jb55 Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. I really don't think there is enough traction right now to transition to a pile of independent servers - lots of less technical people on this instance, and it's a big overhead to set one up relative to the alternatives. More likely that Bitcoin mastodon will just die.
@nvk How much does the VM cost to run per month? Be good for someone else to just take it over, given that so many have joined it.
I urge you to reconsider this or at least give it some time and work with us to come up with some type of plan to work around this. Not sure how feasible it is to pass control to someone else or if we can help in any way.
I believe that the community is benefiting greatly from having this as a resource and it would be incredibly disappointing to waste this opportunity.
If you have any ideas, I'm all ears.
Was planning on buying a house in 2021 according to a five year plan I had in 2016.
I can definitely afford it, but it only makes sense to do so if I can accomplish it without selling any bitcoin (shouldn't be a problem).
However, I don't even want to part with a $ down payment because of the bitcoin opportunity cost.
Add to that my forecast of real estate losing its savings premium over the next decade...
A good lesson to learn:
Time preference is never zero!
Our time is finite.
