- what danger? Blocking nazis is fine, but it's not how you fight them. It only helps them look persecuted and gain sympathy like the guy you're subtooting
- while everyone chimp out at a bunch of pathetic loonies, the same people are very complacent to other ideologies that are objectively as bad as nazis
- Freedom of speech is not nice and comfortable. It either exists for everyone (incl. disgusting people) or for no one (incl. you). Deal with it

Gab thought experiment

@Sosthene @switchingsocial This guy gets it. All these people appealing to emotion because duh everyone hates ISIS and Nazis. But what about communists or militant vegans or self harmers.

@cameron
@Sosthene @switchingsocial

Noooo vegans!!! Fuck off, scum

@Sosthene

Blocking federation isn't censorship.

It doesn't make them victims, unless one's world view is already warped that way.

"Dealing with it" is de-federating with them so they can have their insulated echo bubble.

And if they come out, do what people do in real life, dress up like a clown and join their march so it's a bunch of colorful clowns with swastikas in the streets to show how silly they really are.

@cj @[email protected] ok to clarify I'm totally cool with Mastodon instances blocking Gab or anyone they don't want to communicate with, as FoS is obviously not being entitled other people time and attention. But I don't like all the fuss it's making right now, incl. Gargron himself weighing in to see how to prevent "nazis" using his software.
I don't like communists, but I never ever asked to kick one from any platform. I just block them when they're annoying.

@Sosthene

I don't have a problem with Gargron weighing in on a brand he created specifically to avoid the kind of people on Gab.

However, I don't have sympathy either. It is also kind of a reckoning for him since he's always conveniently not-correcting users who think "the Mastodon protocol" is a thing.

@switchingsocial

Gab thought experiment

@cj @Sosthene The kind of content that’s widespread on Gab is simply and indesputably illegal in Europe. And since Mastodon comes from an EU country, as very many instances do, they have valid concerns here.

Gab thought experiment

@Sosthene @switchingsocial
- Blocking nazis is exactly how you fight them. What is the problem?
- We are not talking about that, we are talking about how to deal with nazis.
- This argument is solely used do defend nazis. No one every mentions freedom of speech when people are persecuted based on race, gender or sexual preferences. At this point this is an overused bad-faith argument.

This take is so icy cold it drained my phone's batteries just reading it. "Blocking Nazis is not how you fight them." 🙄

No, it's *one part* of how you fight them. And a perfectly acceptable part. Since when has a Nazi had a new idea in a social context other than which meme to encode their feral imperalism into or how to co-opt rich interests with promises of a status quo? They got nothing to say, anyways.

Gab thought experiment

@Sosthene @switchingsocial you don't know what freedom means

Gab thought experiment

@Sosthene @switchingsocial remember that platforming isn't a freedom of speech issue... your first 2 points are well-taken but the 3rd is misplaced
